Mixed ability sports should be rolled out following the success of the rugby world cup tournament in Bingley, an MP has urged Government. The event last year saw players with learning and physical disabilities play alongside non-disabled players and was pioneered by Bradford’s Bumble Bees RFU Team. Shipley MP Philip Davies said the tournament made sport accessible to all and must be continued. Speaking in Parliament he said: “With the support and help of the Department of Culture, Media and Sport we had the first ever mixed ability rugby tournament. I want the department to continue to help and support mixed ability rugby and also extend the mixed ability format which was so successfully run in my constituency into other sports as well.” Sports Minister David Evennett said: “I know what a champion Mr Davies is for his constituency. We believe in inclusion and getting as many people involved as possible as we can and I will look at what he has to say and reflect on it.” Mr Davies, along with former Bradford South MP Gerry Sutcliffe supported the campaign for the event to be held in Yorkshire.
