No prisoner should be given more priority over housing than any law abiding citizen, an MP has said.
Shipley MP Philip Davies demanded assurances people released from jail would not be treated more favourably than other people at risk of losing their home.
He said: “I want Government to set out it does not believe in giving prisoners who lose their home any more support than any other person who is in the unfortunate position of losing their home.”
Justice minister Phillip Lee said: “With regard to access to housing I am not aware that ex-offenders are going to be given any more priority than people who have not committed offences. “
Mr Davies said some of his law abiding constituents struggle to pay their bills and ensure a roof over their heads and giving extra help to offenders would be a “kick in the teeth” for hard working families.
