DAVID Cameron's war on binge drinkers was slammed by his backbenchers last night.
The backlash came as drinks firms threatened a legal challenge over the PM's idea that alcohol should be sold for a minimum 40p per unit - saying it breaches EU law.

It would end "buy one get one free" booze offers and set high-strength lager at a minimum £1.20 a canand set see a two-litre bottle of 9 per cent cider rise from £3 to £7.20.

Tory Philip Davies accused the PM of "living in cloud cuckoo land" to believe it will stem rowdy teen boozing.

He said as Home Secretary Theresa May unveiled the policy yesterday: "It's the nanny state running riot."

Conservative Therese Coffey said it could harm families who have to "budget carefully". And colleague Nigel Mills claimed more booze would be smuggled to the UK.

Furious drinks firms insisted the 40p tariff broke competition rules.

The Wine and Spirit Trade Association said last night: "Minimum pricing is illegal under European laws."

Labour's Eric Joyce, who drunkenly assaulted MPs in a Commons bar, said he was also against minimum pricing. He admitted on BBC's Newsnight: "This has no impact on people like me."
