EU

A United States of Europe was not what the people of Great Britain signed up to in 1975. We must be governed from Westminster NOT Brussels.

Philip was the first MP to call for a complete withdrawal from the European Union at the 2005 Conservative Conference. Some of the reasons are below.

Two-thirds of all British laws have come from Brussels, not Westminster. This is a staggering statistic, as well as worrying. If Britain had wanted to make these laws then it would have been done through the British system. However, the Labour government seems content to hand over British sovereignty to Europe.

Since 1973 Great Britain’s membership fee has totalled £186.537 billion. Since being a member of the EU our trade deficit is at an all time high of £27.024 billion. The amount of trade we are doing with Europe shows that they will continue to do trade with us even if we were not to stay a member of the EU.

The idea of if we withdraw from the European Union we will lose all our markets, we won’t be able to trade freely, is a myth. Our balance of trade with the European Union cumulatively since 1973 - balance of trade deficit with the European Union amounts to £230 billion - so we have imported £230 billions more stuff from the European Union than we have exported to them. The idea that they will stop trading with is ridiculous, they want the products as much as we want to export them. There are other countries in Europe like Switzerland whose proportion of trade is much higher with the European Union and they manage very well outside of the European Union.
