Proposals to double the prison time handed to people who assault emergency workers on duty are being backed by Shipley MP Philip Davies.
The new Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Bill introduced by Labour MP Chris Bryant will double the maximum sentence for common assault from six month to a year.
Mr Davies said: “It is absolutely disgusting that our emergency workers, who are caring for people, saving lives and often putting their own lives in danger to protect us, have to deal with being assaulted when they are at work. Those responsible should face the toughest penalties and I am pleased to be supporting Chris in this and will keep doing so until we get the law on the statute book. I have lobbied Government on this, we all need to work together to make sure this happens and protect our emergency workers.”
