About Philip
Philip was born in 1972 in Doncaster and he graduated from the University of Huddersfield with an Upper Second honours degree in Historical and Political Studies. While at university Philip met his wife, Debbie. They live in Baildon with their sons Oliver and Charlie.
Before being elected MP for Shipley, Philip worked at Asda in Leeds as a Senior Marketing Manager and before that as a Customer Services Project Manager.
Philip thinks it is vital to be fully involved in the local community and he has served as both a parish councillor and a school governor. He was part of the 'Baywatch' campaign to improve parking facilities for disabled people and also served on the Better Hospital Food Panel, chaired by Lloyd Grosman.
When not working Philip enjoys all sports, in particular horse-racing, cricket, football and rugby league. He is a member of Baildon Cricket Club.
Philip's Experience
Philip's aim is to represent the interests of ordinary, decent, hardworking people who live in the Shipley constituency. He thinks it is important to stand up for local people in Westminster rather than vice-versa. His goal is to concentrate on issues relevant to the people of the Shipley area and to spend as much time as possible in the constituency rather than in London.
Philip is keen to encourage anybody from the Shipley constituency to contact him with regard to any individual local concerns or on behalf of any local organisations who he would be willing to speak to.
Philip has been involved in politics from an early age, always in Yorkshire. He has been a member of the Conservative Party since 1988 and in 1997 he made a speech on Foreign Affairs at the Conservative Party Conference.
Issues that Philip feels particularly strongly about are maintaining law and order, tackling asylum and immigration problems, protecting the countryside (particularly from over-development) and ensuring pensioners get a better deal. Philip has spent almost a month working with West Yorkshire Police to get a Police insight into how to tackle crime, and in October 2005 became the first Conservative MP to openly state that Britain should withdraw from the EU. Philip is also the Parliamentary Spokesman for the Campaign Against Political Correctness.
